Physical Evaluation on Field

general objective

To assess key physical attributes of players in order to establish a performance baseline and design personalized training programs.

tESTS

Speed – 20 meters

Objective: To measure acceleration and maximum speed over short distances, which are typical in soccer (sprints, pressing, off-the-ball runs).

Why use a 20-meter distance? More than 90% of explosive actions in soccer occur within 20 meters or less. This distance allows for analysis of both the initial acceleration phase and the transition to top speed.

Aspects evaluated:

  • Explosiveness and power at takeoff
  • Short-distance running technique
  • First-step efficiency
  • Acceleration progression

T-Test

Objective: To evaluate multidirectional agility, which is essential in football due to constant changes of direction.

Test layout:

  • 10 meters straight ahead
  • 5 meters to each side from the top center point

Aspects Evaluated:

  • Coordination
  • Body control
  • Reaction time

Reference Ranges:

  • Elite/Professional: 2.90 – 3.10 s
  • Advanced: 3.10 – 3.30 s
  • Intermediate: 3.30 – 3.60 s
  • Basic: >3.60 s

Vo2 Max - Yo-Yo Test

Objective: To measure the ability to sustain repeated high-intensity efforts with short recoveries and estimate VO₂ max.

Importance in soccer:

  • Reflects the real pattern of the game: sprints + recovery
  • More representative than the Cooper or Navette tests

Benefits:

  • Determines specific endurance level
  • Allows for personalized training loads
  • Tracks physical progress during the season

Vertical Power Tests

We assess explosive power — a key factor in sprints, quick turns, and aerial play. We use three test variations:

Vertical Jump Test (CMJ – Counter Movement Jump):

  • Execution: Vertical jump with momentum after a preparatory squat.
  • Goal: Assess power using the countermovement.

Sargent Jump Test:

  • Execution: Vertical jump from a 90° squat position, without momentum.
  • Goal: Measure pure explosive strength.

Abalakov Test:

  • Execution: Jump using arm swing for impulse.
  • Goal: Measure power and coordination.

Flexibility

Objective: To assess the flexibility of the hamstring muscles and the lumbar region.
